Starting Work
To help you get the things you need and want, and make it easier to handle the money you'll earn,
we have packages specially designed to meet your needs.
Each one gives you an everyday account with no monthly account or transaction fees
for the first year of the package. You can apply for a choice of credit
card, an overdraft or personal loan - to help you with your expenses when you're
getting started. You can also use Online and Mobile Banking, giving you
a simple way to manage your money. There's also affordable content, car and life
insurance just in case, plus savings account options and retirement savings so you can
plan for your future.
You can choose:
Take control of your finances
To help you start work with your finances well under control we have a range of
calculators. You can enter your own details to work out your
personal Budget or work out a
savings plan to meet your goals.
Looking ahead
Is buying a home one of those savings goals? We have a home ambition package that will get you closer, sooner.
Is it a trip? Then we can help with travel planning and arranging
the finances.
One thing that you should start thinking about - even though it is ages away - is
planning for your retirement. Compounding returns
mean a few dollars set aside regularly, early in your working life can grow to be worth a lot more than
big sums saved up in later years.
Get the most from your banking
Tip 1 - keep your everyday account in credit. If you've chosen the 'pay as you go' fee plan and your average
daily balance for the month is above $5,000, the monthly account maintenance fee is waived.
Tip 2 - use automated banking. ATMs, EFTPOS, automatic payments, touchtone phone banking, Mobile Phone Banking
and Online Banking are more convenient and take less time than going into a branch or writing a cheque.
Tip 3 - use your loan and Credit card wisely. If you do need to borrow money, it's worth talking to a
National Bank staff member for advice on which option might suit you best.
We have a number of other tips to check out that will help you
save money on your banking.
Applying for your banking package
We can open your everyday account and have it available at the branch nearest to where
you're working. It will save time if you have these items when you apply (if you're
applying online we'll arrange a time for you to bring them into a branch for
verification).
If you are an existing National Bank customer all you need is:
-
Proof of completion of school in the last 2 years (e.g. NCEA exam results
certificate, UE certificate, school report) if you are applying for WorkStart Plus,
or
-

proof of New Zealand Residency or New Zealand Passport, if you are applying for Graduate Plus, plus

(if applying for either/or both packages).
