About Security
Using Online Banking
Only registered users can access The National Bank Online Banking system. Before you can use the banking
services on this site you must register with the Bank and agree
to be bound by the Conditions of Use of this site and
the Online Banking services. For information about protecting your password, the New Zealand Bankers'
Association has produced a leaflet, ‘Protecting your Cards, Pins
& Passwords’, or you can pick up a copy from any of our branches.
'Two-factor authentication' – OnlineCode
For additional security, the Bank has a ‘two-factor authentication’ process called
OnlineCode. This process is mandatory for high value payments (over $10,000) and Sending Money Overseas. It works by sending a unique single use 8-digit code to your mobile phone to authenticate the payment.
You can also use OnlineCode as an added security feature for smaller payments or for other functions, such as logging on, changing your Online Banking password, or setting up bill payees and automatic payments.
Data Encryption
As with any normal banking transaction, the Bank will treat your information and transactions as strictly
confidential. Once you log on to Online Banking, your session will be secured using a 128-bit encrypted
connection (using Microsoft Server Gated Cryptography) between yourself and the Bank. All transactions and
internet messages using National Bank Online Banking are transmitted in this encrypted environment, ensuring
that the information is protected by a high level of security.
To benefit from the full functionality of our website, you need to use a browser that supports 128-bit data
encryption and has both JavaScript and cookies enabled. This is a default setting on most computers.
Our new Online Banking will work best in a modern internet browser. We will now support Internet Explorer 7
or above, Firefox 3.5 or above and Safari 4.0 or above. Older versions, such as Internet Explorer 6 may not
display Online Banking correctly and may be less secure than our supported Internet browsers. To upgrade your
Internet browser visit the Microsoft, Firefox or Apple website.
