What we are doing to protect you

We're committed to doing everything we can to keep your banking secure. We make a considerable investment in establishing and maintaining the best possible systems and processes to protect you.

Here are some of the measures we have in place:

OnlineCode – Two-factor Authentication

National Bank Online Banking customers can get double the protection with OnlineCode. A unique code is sent to your mobile phone and must be entered into Online Banking to authorise certain transactions. It provides an additional layer of security, along with your customer number and password.

Education

Our Online Security Centre is one way we keep our customers informed about safe online practices, and aware of different types of online fraud. We proactively work with business and personal customers in a number of ways to keep them up-to-date with new developments and reinforce ways they can protect themselves from online fraud.

Transaction monitoring

The National Bank makes a considerable investment in sophisticated transaction monitoring software to help identity potential fraud before it happens. The software identifies potentially fraudulent or suspicious transactions and alerts bank staff so that they can investigate and take action as required.

Extended Validation

Online Banking has an Extended Validation security certificate for your peace of mind. This means that if you use either Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 3 (or a later version) the address bar will change colour to green in Online Banking, so you know you’re in the genuine National Bank Online Banking system.

Bank Mail

Ordinary email is not a secure facility. You should never use it to send confidential information, like bank account details, as others may be able to intercept it. That's why we provide our Bank Mail option with Online Banking. Bank Mail allows you to exchange confidential information about your account with us in a secure environment.

Data encryption

All Online Banking sessions are secured using a 128-bit encrypted connection (using Microsoft Server Gated Cryptography) between yourself and the Bank. This means that the data travelling across the Internet, your computer and the Online Banking system is encrypted, protecting your data from other people.

Online Banking time-outs

You should always ensure you sign out of Online Banking when you have finished using it. However, if you forget, a session 'time-out' automatically logs you off the system if there has been no activity for a certain period. This ensures no-one else can see your Online Banking information.

Firewalls

We install and maintain up-to-date firewall technology to protect our systems from unauthorised access via the Internet.
